How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs fell off the little key ring at the top, which is where it attaches the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've made a hole, then wet-sanded the area to make it stronger. However, I'm sure that's not helping.
I've also tried wrapping the broken the ring using clear tape, but it didn't work much better. This is a pity, as I use the little split ring to keep my keys in place.
